Although first- and second-year students at UCLA are linguistically and culturally diverse given their international profile, they tend to have a common starting point with respect to their “digital fluency.” It is important to incorporate metacognative and digital-literacy skills into the writing classroom to transcend cultural boundaries and to give students transferable skills to succeed in the courses of their major and in other writing situations. Teaching cognitive and practical skills related to electronic media is now considered a best practice in foundational composition courses.

Dr. Leigh Harris from UCLA’s Writing Programs is exploring solutions with CDH to enable media-rich writing projects for her Fall English 3 class. Ideally, students would be able to embed online videos on the page, and restrict the portion of those videos that plays back based on the arguments that they are making.
